‘Sonnet’ on a shoot of Borkumriff IV in the Solent UK, courtesy of BEKEN.

Owens have a 53ft chase boat based at Port Solent for client support,. ‘Sonnet’ is powered by twin GM diesels of 435hp each giving a fast cruising speed of 20-22 knots and a sprint speed of 24 knots.

The deep V design gives excellent seakeeping characteristics and offers a very stable platform for stills and video. The flybridge gives a high vantage point of some 20ft (when standing) which means the horizon on all but the largest yachts is above the deck level producing a cleaner image.

Chase photography, whether from a fast motorboat or helicopter requires a thorough knowledge of boat and aircraft handling. Roy Roberts has had a fast motor yacht for marine photography (not the same one!) for over 20 years. Roy also held a fixed wing pilots licence for over 15 years with extensive helicopter flying. With helicopter work, this experience creates cost savings in helicopter time through clear and accurate instructions from the passenger area to the pilot.
